How to Relieve Your Stress

Whether you go to school, work, or take care of the house, stress is likely to be a presence in your everyday life. While this is unavoidable, there are things that you can do to ease the burden on your mind and body.

Why Stress is So Prevalent in Our Society

With the pace of living these days, it's uncommon not to be stressed out. We've become too accustomed to having things exactly when we want them, and when things become delayed we tend to become impatient (and thus more stressed out). Missing deadlines for work, not making the grades you want in school, being refused acceptance to the college of your choice, these common setbacks tend to make us feel inadequate and give us a lot to worry about. The world places a heavy burden on you as soon as you're thrust into it to achieve success in all aspects of life, and falling short can really put a toll on your mind.

How to Relax

There are many small steps to take that will prevent a nervous breakdown due to being overly stressed out. These steps are not difficult in the slightest, just take the time out of your life to devotedly follow them and you will definitely see an improvement in yourself.

  • Take a breather. Take a step back from the hassles of life every once in a while. Empty your mind and your lungs, and just focus on slowly breathing. It really helps me anytime I'm close to being incapacitated by stress.
  • Don't let life take you by surprise. You'll find that few things in life can't be fixed by having a well thought out plan. Keep a budget for your finances, and try to do the same with your time. Set aside time for family, work, and yourself, so that you aren't left lacking in any department.
  • Keep your mind occupied. When you find yourself sitting there, bored out of your mind, you'll also notice that your mind is more likely to wander to your troubles (whatever they may be) during this time. Eliminate this possibility by doing things that occupy your mind. This can be anything from getting ahead in your schoolwork, putting in extra hours at work, or becoming more involved in your favorite hobby. The more constructive the better, because you can build up your place in the world while taking your mind off of whatever is bringing you down.
  • Express your feelings. I realize that I'll probably lose most of my male readers here. Trust me, I know that it's hard to talk about what's going on in your head, but if you let it out and talk about it, you'll no longer be left with the weight of the world on your shoulders.
  • Take help where you can get it. I'm not saying ask for handouts, but when people offer you help and you need it, accept. You don't need to take the world on alone. Whether it's a friend offering to tutor you in a class that you aren't doing particularly well in, or a neighbor willing to help you move to a new house, let others lend a helping hand when you need one.

Side-Effects of Too Much Stress

Why create an entire hub about stress? What makes it's so serious? I mean, people deal with it every single day, and the worst they have to show for it is a headache, right? Wrong.

As a young child (yes, even children must deal with stress sometimes) I was diagnosed with shingles, which is produced by the same virus that causes chicken pox and can break out due to unusually high levels of stress. It's only able to be contracted after you have had chicken pox, and while it isn't life threatening, it is extremely painful and can last up 5 weeks.

Shingles is the reason that I know about the harmful effects of stress on the body, however by no means is it the only thing that you have to worry about if you're the type to constantly worry about everything. It can also lead to depression, sleep problems, anxiety attacks, high blood pressure, and much more.

With all of the setbacks of stress, there is no reason not to follow these simple steps to a calmer mind.

Great Hub! It is perfect that you mentioned about talking about feelings. I did this today and felt a TON better. It was my first day back to college.
